We are pleased to present this unique Italian oil on canvas painting from the late 19th century. This male portrait is signed lower right: M. Marinelli and dated 1894. No biographical information has been found about this Italian artist.
This intensely dramatic painting depicts the man in a moment of pure psychological and emotional anguish. The man's eyes are wide open, staring wide and turned to the side in an expression of pure shock. His brows are furrowed and his mouth is slightly open, accentuating the sense of desperation and bewilderment. The man clutches one hand to his chest, clutching his shirt in an instinctive gesture of intense anxiety or internal pain. His thick, dark, curly hair appears disheveled and swollen, framing his face and visually amplifying the sitter's emotional chaos. The sitter wears a light-colored, ivory-yellow shirt with wide sleeves, typical of the clothing of artists of the Romantic era. A strong lateral light illuminates the face and hands, leaving the rest in shadow, creating a dramatic contrast reminiscent of Caravaggio's style. The background is devoid of detail, painted in muted grays and browns. This choice eliminates any distractions, forcing the viewer to focus exclusively on the subject's state of mind.
