Product description
We are pleased to present this splendid oil painting on masonite panel mounted on plywood, dating back to the early 20th century. This magnificent landscape is signed at the bottom left: L. Clara. The signature is attributable to the Italian painter Luigi Clara (Turin, 1870 - Genoa, 1925).
The painter depicts an Italian landscape with predominantly autumnal colors and a light suggestive of sunset or a hazy dawn. The view is ideally divided into two zones: dense vegetation on the left and a body of water (likely a river or a tranquil pond) on the right. The left section is dominated by a dark, dense, and compact mass of woodland. From this tangle of foliage, a tree with a tall, more bare trunk emerges, rising vertically, creating a striking contrast with the light clouds behind. At the bottom left, an uneven path, painted in earthy tones, and foliage gently sloping toward the water's edge, dominating the left section. The vegetation features deep shades of dark green, burnt brown, sienna, and touches of rust. The beautiful sky is a central and highly dynamic element. It is filled with clouds painted with brushstrokes of pale blue, creamy white, and golden highlights. This warm, diffused light illuminates the center of the composition and is subtly reflected on the calm surface of the water.
This work of high artistic quality features loose, textured brushstrokes with a clear Impressionist or Macchiaiola influence. The artist does not focus on photographic or minute details (such as individual leaves), but prefers to capture the overall impression, the volumes of nature, and the play of light and shadow.
