OIL ON PANEL – SIGNED “JONATHAN”
1. Identification of the work
Artist: JONATHAN. The handwritten, cursive, ascending signature in the lower right corner is characteristic of the contemporary artist Jonathan Lasker (American, born in 1948), a major figure in international abstraction.
Subject: Floral composition “Still Life with Bouquet.” The work explores the contrast between graphic motifs and a generous impasto. The artist is renowned for his interplay of textures and layering of forms.
Signature: First name “Jonathan” clearly drawn directly into the wet paint.
2. Technical Characteristics
Technique: Oil painting executed using the impasto technique (strong impasto applied with a palette knife). The paint is sculpted to give the flowers a three-dimensional volume, creating plays of shadow depending on the lighting.
Support: Oil on rigid panel (hardboard type), a stable support preferred for works with thick impasto.
Format: OVAL, a classic and distinctive format.
Dimensions: 60 cm x 50 cm (Large format).
Back of frame: Period finish with textured decorative paper imitating reptile print (Havana brown), typical of luxury framing from the 1960s and 1970s.
3. Condition
Paint layer: Very good condition. The colors remain vibrant and the paint is sound. There are no cracks or lifting in areas of high relief.
Frame: Original oval frame in walnut-stained wood with a black inner border and gold trim. There are some minor signs of wear and chips in the stain (white spots) at the edges, consistent with the age of the piece.
