Some landscapes seem to hold silence. A river glides between the trees, almost still. On its banks, large trunks rise in a soft light, while in the distance the forest gradually fades into shades of blue. This oil on canvas, signed by Robert Miller, possesses that particular quality of landscapes into which the eye can wander. The painter constructed his composition like a stroll. In the foreground, the trees assert their presence. Their powerful, slightly inclined trunks frame the landscape and naturally guide the eye towards the water. The river then becomes a path of light that crosses the canvas before disappearing into that bluish opening in the distance. That is where much of the work's charm lies. As one moves away from the foreground, the contours become lighter, the colors soften, and the trees seem progressively absorbed by the atmosphere. The texture of the paint also changes across the different planes. On the large trunks, Robert Miller applies the paint generously. The impasto of cream, ochre, brown, and blue-gray builds the bark almost in relief. Some brushstrokes directly catch the light and give the surface a presence that photographs only partly convey. The undergrowth is treated with greater subtlety. Branches crisscross, foliage disperses, and a few warm tones hint at vegetation already touched by the season. Then blue appears. First in the water, then behind the trees, all the way to that luminous opening that gives the painting its full depth. The palette is particularly harmonious: earthy browns, golden ochres, muted greens, creamy whites, and slightly hazy blues respond to each other without ever disturbing the calm of the composition. The painting is presented in a very beautiful gilded frame with wide moldings. A light textile border creates a breathing space between the canvas and the frame, while a thin inner gilded fillet highlights the composition. A few marks of time appear on the frame and the textile border, visible in the photographs. Robert Miller. Signed oil on canvas. River landscape in undergrowth. Second half of the 20th century.
