Some paintings depict a scene, while others, like this one, preserve a memory, evoking a way of life that has almost vanished: childhood shared in tenement courtyards, where the world could be reduced to a toy, a cat, and an ordinary afternoon.
The scene is constructed from seemingly humble elements: small socks drying in the sun, children's scribbles on the wall, a worn door, and a large communal bin that anchors the composition in the reality of those old shared courtyards. Nothing appears by chance.
From a technical standpoint, the painter, San Deogracias, demonstrates remarkable compositional mastery. The diagonal of the staircase structures the space and guides the eye toward the delicate dialogue between the child and the cat, the true emotional core of the work. The brushstrokes are restrained and confident, favoring narrative clarity without sacrificing the rich texture inherent in oil paint.
