Description
The designer duo Charles and Ray Eames were key players in the development of post-war American design. Eames' guiding principle was to create high-quality yet aesthetically sophisticated designs. The use of innovative materials such as die-cast aluminum and fiberglass, while taking ergonomic principles into account, was revolutionary at the time. Their prolific work has influenced generations of architects and designers.
In 1970, Charles Eames was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1977 to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
The couple designed the Fiberglass Chair in 1948. However, the model didn't go into production until the early 1950s, as its manufacturing proved too technically demanding. The breakthrough came with the use of fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin. Today, the Fiberglass Chair is considered one of the most important design icons of the 20th century.
