Description
The design duo Charles and Ray Eames were key figures in the development of American post-war design. Eames' guiding principle was to create high-quality and aesthetically sophisticated designs. The use of innovative materials such as die-cast aluminum and fiberglass, while adhering to ergonomic principles, was revolutionary at the time. Their extensive body of work has influenced generations of architects and designers.
In 1970, Charles Eames was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 1977 to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
The couple designed the Fiberglass Chair as early as 1948. However, the model did not go into production until the early 1950s, as its manufacture proved too technically demanding. The breakthrough came only with the use of polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass fibers. Today, the Fiberglass Chair is considered one of the most important design icons of the 20th century.
