Impressive, hand-carved sculpture inspired by the famous mourners (mourning figures) from the mausoleum of Philip the Bold (ca. 1400), a masterpiece by Claus Sluter and the Burgundian International Gothic style.
The sculpture depicts a restrained, cloaked figure with a deeply falling hood, sculpted with powerful hand-axe and gouging strokes. The expressive vertical draperies and tranquil pose are characteristic of the Gothic devotional style and give the work a timeless, spiritual aura.
The piece is signed R. Van Riet.
The sculpture is crafted from a solid oak trunk and features the characteristic natural cracks associated with old oak carvings, yet is structurally stable and has a beautiful warm patina.
