This wall crucifix soberly combines wood and metal in a balanced composition, characteristic of French religious production from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The oak cross is crafted with inlaid brass fillets that run along the four arms, bringing a discreet golden touch to the dark wood. The small natural knots in the oak, visible on the upright, contribute to the authentic character of the piece. The molded brass Christ figure has beautiful modeling. The crown of thorns, the draped perizonium (loincloth), and the suppedaneum (footrest) are carefully rendered, in this tradition of popular religious statuary which sought to combine quality craftsmanship and accessibility. The brass INRI titulus is affixed to the top of the cross. A beautiful object for domestic devotion, to hang in a bedroom, entryway, or library, or to integrate into a collection of antique objects with spiritual or heritage significance. Height approximately 37 cm. Width approximately 18 cm. France, late 19th – early 20th century.
