The iconic POÄNG armchair was launched in 1976 as the POEM. Designed by Japanese designer Noboru Nakamura in collaboration with IKEA's Lars Engman, it became a worldwide success thanks to its comfortable, U-shaped curved wooden frame. In 1992, the name was changed to POÄNG.
The chair owes its success and enduring popularity to its lightweight, springy cantilever design and accessible price. Originally, the design closely resembled Alvar Aalto's Model 406 from 1939, but IKEA managed to make the concept accessible to the general public by using laminated wood and mass production.
What makes this 1999 version so special is that it is a limited edition, a tribute to Alvar Aalto, and was released exactly 60 years after the introduction of Armchair 406.
