18 well-known and ‘almost’ well-known Dutch people were inspired by Tomeï’s inimitable photographs to write an essay. For instance, Daphe Dekkers writes about her childhood in the Ooijpolder, Gerrit Komrij about his mischievous antics in the quarry near Winterswijk, Aaf Brandt Corstius about her night (with a fox) in a beach house in IJmuiden. Sylvia Witteman writes about her (nude) beach experiences, Hans Aarsman about his city of Amsterdam, Albert Beintema about bird landings on highways, Herman Pleij about the Netherlands as a construction kit, Martin Bril about Zurich (Friesland, mind you), etc., etc.
But NLXL is above all an aerial photography book, a picture book. Karel Tomeï’s aerial images are works of art in themselves, sometimes appearing otherworldly, yet 100% Dutch. Because of his perfect compositions and spatial arrangements, previous books about Karel’s work have often been reprinted and he has won many international awards. Mega-large photos by him can be seen, for example, on Schiphol's new budget airline pier.
NLXL contains 350 images and has a portrait format of 360 x 300 mm. NLXL has approximately 500 pages and weighs nearly 5 kilos.
