Nina Simone is considered, along with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Billie Holiday, one of the four greatest jazz singers in history. Her original style stemmed from the fusion of gospel and pop songs with classical music. In the mid-1960s, she became involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Her music was highly influential in the fight for equal rights waged by Black Americans during this period in the United States. Powerful and radical, she was a source of inspiration for that generation and continues to be so for those that follow.
