The Nez Percé (or Nimi'ipuu) are a Native American people of the Columbia Plateau, known for their rich history, horse culture, and the famous "Nez Percé War" of 1877 under Chief Joseph. They traditionally lived in parts of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, hunting bison and fishing for salmon, and were called "pierced noses" by French explorers, a name that did not apply to them. Today, they are a federal tribe in Idaho and Washington, with a strong focus on preserving their land and culture.
