Millefiori (Italian for “a thousand flowers”) is a classic glassmaking technique that originated in Roman times, and was revived and perfected on Murano Island, Venice, during the 19th and 20th centuries. It produces decorative patterns that resemble tiny, colorful flowers, often embedded within clear or opaque glass. The effect is created using glass canes (rods), which are layered, stretched, and cut into thin cross-sections to reveal intricate designs. These slices are then fused together or encased in clear glass to form vases, paperweights, beads, and other decorative objects.
