Large-format Chinese vase, elegant and visually striking, made using the ancient cloisonné technique (enameling on a copper/bronze base).
Provenance and History: Acquired in 1992 from an Asian businessman who imported it from China. It belongs to the period of production of the state-run arts and crafts factories in Beijing in the late 19th century, whose large-scale pieces were destined for luxury exports and high-end diplomatic or commercial decoration.
Symbolism: A classic scene from Eastern culture imbued with auspiciousness: the phoenix ("fenghuang," symbol of prosperity, peace, and good fortune) surrounded by large peonies ("mudan," symbol of wealth and honor).
High-End Details: The background features the iconic imperial "jingtai blue" of cloisonné, meticulously worked throughout the piece with extremely fine brass threads forming waves that emulate the movement of clouds (cloud scrolls). The mouth, neck, and base are adorned with intricate scrollwork of sacred lotus flowers, Greek key patterns, and a thick, gilded metal rim on the supporting lips.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition, pristine from a display case. The body, the glossy enamel, and the metallic threads are free of chips, cracks, or enamel flaking.
The original hand-carved hardwood base is included. Due to its size and weight, it shows normal wear from friction on the upper area where the vase rests and on the base of the legs from contact with the floor. It has been cleaned, conditioned, and treated with woodworking products to achieve a flawless satin sheen.
