Product description
An exceptional monastery bench designed by Dutch architect and Benedictine monk Dom Hans van der Laan. The model was originally conceived for the Abbey of St. Benedictusberg in Vaals and embodies Van der Laan’s rigorous approach to proportion, rhythm and the relationship between mass and space. Its radically reduced construction combines painted pine with slender galvanized steel supports and precisely positioned copper nails, resulting in an austere yet remarkably refined architectural presence.ProvenanceThis particular example comes from the Pauluskerk in Dongen, Netherlands. Its distinctive blue finish was later applied to a very high standard by Dutch designer Floris Hovers, following the colour principles of Wim van Hooff, who worked closely with Dom Hans van der Laan. The carefully considered colour treatment complements the proportions, materials and architectural character of the original design.About the DesignerDom Hans van der Laan (1904–1991) was a Dutch Benedictine monk, architect and architectural theorist, internationally recognized for his highly disciplined approach to proportion and sacred architecture. He developed the Plastic Number, a proportional system central to his architectural philosophy. His furniture reflects the same principles as his buildings: elementary construction, carefully balanced dimensions and an exceptional restraint in material and form.ConditionVery good vintage condition with signs of wear consistent with age and use. The painted surface displays subtle traces of use and a beautifully developed character.DetailsDesigner: Dom Hans van der LaanOrigin: NetherlandsPeriod: 1960sMaterials: Painted pine wood, galvanized steel and copper nailsOriginal commission: Abbey of St. Benedictusberg, VaalsProvenance: Pauluskerk, Dongen, NetherlandsColour: Later painted by Floris Hovers following the colour principles of Wim van HooffDimensions H 74 x W 228 x D 44 cm, seat height 48 cm
