Ilmari Tapiovaara was a Finnish interior architect and designer. He also served as a visiting professor at the renowned Illinois Institute of Technology. Early in his career, while still a student in Helsinki, he worked in Alvar Aalto's studio in London. After graduating, he was an assistant to Le Corbusier in Paris. In the early 1950s, Tapiovaara and his wife, Annikki, opened their own studio in Helsinki. Between 1951 and 1960, Ilmari Tapiovaara received six gold medals at the Milan Triennale for his designs—more than any other designer. In 1971, he was awarded the Finnish State Prize for Design.
Tapiovaara designed the Fanett chair in 1955.
Ilmari Tapiovaara died in Helsinki in 1999.
The chair is in very good condition with minor signs of wear. One chair still has a label on the underside. The paint has been refinished.
