Gerald Thurston: Born in 1914 in the United States, he was one of the most innovative American lighting designers of the post-war era. He gained great renown for his lamps and lighting fixtures, which perfectly illustrated the clean lines and elegant materials of the mid-20th century. His long collaboration with the Lightolier company in the 1950s and 1960s gave rise to some of his most iconic lamps, still highly sought after by collectors. Little is known about Thurston's early career; however, it is known that he joined the Lightolier team at a pivotal moment in design history: the mid-20th-century taste for simple yet innovative forms was beginning to supplant the ornate creations of previous generations, leading to a global shift in design approach. In fact, Lightolier began a collaboration with the Italian company Artluce during this period, reflecting its desire to embrace these modernist trends. It was in this context that Thurston's vision had a particularly strong impact, as he too embodied the desire to experiment with new minimalist and functional, industrial and elegant, and above all, original forms and constructions. Thurston elevated his creations by incorporating diverse materials and textures. For example, he combined raw brass with cream porcelain or wood grain to create lamps and light fixtures that were as much sculptural installations as they were sources of light.
