Around the turn of the 20th century, the fashion for crested china captivated British collectors' display cabinets. These miniature white porcelain figurines, adorned with the coats of arms of UK towns and boroughs, were produced by numerous specialized workshops and brought back as travel souvenirs. The most sought-after today are those representing identified monuments or historical objects. This piece is signed Caledonia Heraldic China, a Scottish manufacturer active between 1900 and the 1930s, whose circular Scottish thistle hallmark is now well-documented by specialized collectors. The very name of the manufacturer—Caledonia, the Latin name for Scotland—affirms its deep roots in Scottish craft tradition. Its productions, distinct from simple mass-produced souvenirs, are listed in the reference catalogs of the Goss & Crested China Club, the British association that unites enthusiasts of this type of porcelain. This miniature armchair precisely reproduces the chair of Mary Queen of Scots preserved at Edinburgh Castle, as inscribed on its back: Model of Mary Queen of Scots Chair, Edinburgh Castle. The back is crowned with finely applied gilded volutes, while the seat bears the polychrome coat of arms of the City of Edinburgh, complete with its supporters, escutcheon, and city motto.
