Tomado Modular Metal Wall Unit — Dutch Design, 1960s
A characteristic Tomado wall unit from the 1960s, beautifully showcasing the strength of Dutch post-war design: functional, light in construction, and at the same time distinctly graphic.
The system consists of slender metal wall supports and nine grey metal shelves. It is precisely the simplicity of the construction that gives the furniture its architectural appearance. The horizontal lines of the shelves are interrupted by the open wire steel supports, creating a rhythmic composition on the wall that looks different from every arrangement.
An important part of the design is its modularity. The various supports and shelves can be combined as desired, allowing the system to be built up compactly or across a larger wall. Beautiful as an open bookcase in a living room or study, but at least as strong as a minimalist display for art, ceramics, and collected objects.
The understated grey finish makes the furniture particularly versatile. Against a light plastered wall, it acquires an almost graphic appearance, while a combination with wood, concrete, or a pronounced wall colour enhances its industrial character.
An authentic piece of Dutch Design that still feels surprisingly contemporary more than sixty years after its creation.
