A very rare vintage sideboard, attributed to Cor Alons for Gouda den Boer, produced in the 1970s. Due to limited documentation and the small production run of Alons, this attribution cannot be confirmed with complete certainty, but the design shows clear characteristics that strongly point in that direction.
We picked up the sideboard in Rotterdam from a fellow dealer who was at a loss. The piece was in a sorry state: damaged wood hidden beneath a thick, dark lacquer layer that made the whole thing rather somber. Exactly the kind of project we get excited about!
Once in our hands, the sideboard was restored with the utmost care and attention. When the dark lacquer layer was removed, something special was revealed: zebrano wood with a spectacular, vibrant grain. This exotic wood was particularly popular in the 1970s and is known for its distinctive grain and exclusive appearance. The damage to the veneer has been expertly repaired and made virtually invisible. Here and there, a subtle trace of its former life can still be found—we prefer to call that character!
The cabinet features three doors with ample storage space behind them. There are also four smoothly running drawers, one of which features an original cutlery insert—a charming detail from a bygone era. The stark contrast between the white drawer fronts, the warm zebrano wood, and the brass handles gives the cabinet a truly luxurious and unique look.
Grand in size, impressively heavy, and noticeably solid. A true mid-century eye-catcher that effortlessly carries the space and is unique. And then those legs… wow. Slender, distinctive, and subtly tapered, giving this heavy cabinet a surprisingly airy feel. Pure Dutch design!
