This original Mid-Century Modern shelving unit was designed by Nisse and Kajsa Strinning for String Design AB in Sweden during the 1960s. The iconic 'Ladder Shelf' design, which won a gold medal at the 1954 Milan Triennale, is presented here in a warm gold ash wood finish.
The modular system features a combination of ash wood and black lacquered metal side panels. It includes one wall cabinet with sliding doors and an internal shelf, two narrow shelves measuring 20 cm in depth, and three wide shelves measuring 30 cm in depth. The unit is supported by four black metal side panels, two measuring approximately 77 cm in height and two measuring approximately 102 cm. The total width when arranged as a single unit is approximately 81 cm, though the modular nature allows for custom configurations. Original manufacturer labels are present on the cabinet and one of the shelves.
The shelving unit remains in good vintage condition, retaining its original character and functionality. The wood displays a natural patina consistent with its age and history.
This versatile String shelving system is a quintessential piece of Scandinavian design. Its minimalist aesthetic and adaptable structure make it an ideal storage solution for mid-century modern or contemporary living spaces, home offices, or dining areas.
