Beautiful vintage sideboard from the "Mahjongg" series, produced by Ouwenbroek's Furniture Factory in the 1960s. A nice detail: this exact sideboard has been revived by Bree's New World (the new name for Ouwenbroek's) according to the original construction drawings and is now available for purchase again.
This example is an original from the 1960s, which we collected from the estate of the original owners in Rijswijk. The sons told us that they had been telling their mother for years that the sideboard should be thrown away. But she was never able to part with it, and we are still grateful for that. Imagine if this piece of furniture had been lost!
Once it arrived in our workshop, the sideboard was carefully restored to its original condition, exactly as we had agreed with the sons. The rich teak wood now displays a spectacular grain and has regained its warm, deep color. A few scratches remain visible on the top; consider it evidence of a former life. A little extra character never hurts, right?
The sideboard features two sliding doors and three smoothly running drawers. Behind the sliding doors lies ample storage space, one side of which is divided into two compartments with a shelf. One of the drawers also has a cutlery organizer—perhaps less necessary these days, but a charming detail nonetheless. The piece is compact, yet surprisingly spacious and exceptionally functional.
The designer seems clearly inspired by Danish aesthetics, but the square, angular shapes reveal a Dutch interpretation of that style. The high, slender legs, the square inlaid handles, and the subtly tapered edges make it a feast for the eyes. The sideboard exudes elegance and class and is at home in almost any interior.
