An unusual and expressive ceramic wall hanging from the European post-war modern period.
The artwork spans two square ceramic tiles and depicts a stylized figure with a halo, presented strictly frontally, holding a book and a quill-like writing instrument. The minimalist design, bold black outlines, and deep, vividly speckled glazes in petrol blue, gray, brown, and black lend the piece a distinctive, almost archaic quality.
The ceramic piece is hand-signed in the lower right corner. The signature has not yet been definitively attributed to any artist. The work is likely a Dutch or Western European studio piece from the late 1950s to 1960s.
The two tiles are mounted in a simple wooden frame, which perfectly complements the understated mid-century character of the work.
