Beautiful vintage armchair, designed by Piet Muntendam and produced by Gebroeders Jonkers Noordwolde in the 1950s. Although Muntendam is not a top name like Dirk van Sliedregt was for Jonkers, this design exudes the same quality and refinement for which the factory is known.
This armchair comes from the original family in Capelle aan den IJssel and was put up for sale (with a heavy heart) because the owner became a grandmother and had to make room for a guest room.
Upon arrival, it was clear that the armchair needed some love. The wicker had dried out over the years and the old finish on the frame had seen better days. Therefore, the teak frame has been completely stripped and refinished. As a result, the wood has regained that rich, warm appearance, without losing its lived-in character.
The seat is fitted with new webbing and is upholstered in dark brown leather. It shows some signs of wear here and there, which naturally contributes to its authenticity and character. The cane backrest catches the eye immediately and is generally in beautiful condition. There are a few minor imperfections here and there, but structurally it is completely sound. Moreover, the cane has been re-treated, making it more supple and less fragile again.
The design of the armchair is typically mid-century, and the overall impression is very elegant. This is partly due to the purity of the forms and the lightness of the materials. The contrast between dark teak and light cane is truly a feast for the eyes. Combining natural materials in furniture design continues to have a magical quality. Dutch design to be proud of!
