Massimo Vignelli shaped the visual landscape of mid-century America, creating designs we still encounter today. In collaboration with his wife Lella, the Italian designer created now-famous corporate identities for such companies as American Airlines, Knoll International and Bloomingdales. He also designed the network of signage used to navigate the New York City subway system. Used since 1972, Vignelli's signage system identifies subway lines using numbers and letters in colored circles. His graphic signs feature easy-to-read white-on-black text designed to help millions of people find their way through the city. Vignelli's clean, grid-based compositions, dynamic use of color and dedication to sans serif fonts set a standard for American graphic design, especially in public settings, and made Helvetica the most ubiquitous font in the country.
