Product description
A beautiful, fully authentic English secretary from the late George III period (circa 1795). This is definitely not a later reproduction, but a rare and honest piece of history over 230 years old with unique mechanical details. Why this is a masterpiece: Rare automatic mechanism: The wooden supports (runners) slide out fully automatically and synchronously via an ingenious historical lever system as soon as you open the writing flap. This still works flawlessly! Historically marked fittings: The writing flap is equipped with the original brass hinges bearing the sought-after "Hodges Patent" stamp (the famous London locksmith of that era). Luxurious materials & perfect inlay: Crafted from warm Cuban mahogany. The refined inlay of golden-yellow satinwood and boxwood stringing is still in perfect, fully intact condition all around. Solid oak interior: The drawers are made entirely of solid oak on the inside with the original, wafer-thin hand-sawn dovetail joints. Condition: Structurally, the furniture is in excellent and solid condition. The inlaid leather writing surface shows clear signs of use and patina from the centuries (see photos). The back panel has shrinkage cracks that are completely normal for its age, which is proof of the natural movement of the centuries-old solid wood.
