A small piece of the Southwest, painted with that freedom and freshness that give all their charm to the faience of Martres-Tolosane. This beautiful Matet France plate, made in the second half of the 20th century, features a generous, entirely polychrome decoration where deep blue, ochre, and olive green stand out against a bright white background. At the center, a stylized bird leans among the foliage, in a scene full of movement. Its blue and ochre plumage is surrounded by long brown stems, small green leaves, and freely drawn flowers that extend onto the rim. The slightly scalloped edge, highlighted with a green line, finishes the composition with great character. The entire appeal of the piece lies in this hand-painted decoration. One can see the variations of the brush, the subtle differences in color intensity, and that spontaneity that an industrially printed decoration never possesses. With its approximately 24 cm in diameter, it has a particularly interesting presence. It can naturally be used at the table, but its central decoration also makes it a very attractive plate to display in a china cabinet, on a shelf, or in a wall composition mixing antique faience and artisanal ceramics. The reverse bears the initials MF for Matet France, accompanied by the handwritten reference of the design. The factory is part of the long-standing faience tradition of Martres-Tolosane, known for its hand-crafted decorations and its repertoire of birds, flowers, and foliage. A cheerful, artisanal, and very French piece, with that sunny charm of southern faience that one loves to bring out for a beautiful table as much as to simply let it live within the decor. It shows some slight traces of time and small irregularities visible in the photographs, none of which detract from its very charming character.
