A beautiful example of early German Mid-Century Modern: the SW 88, designed by Herta-Maria Witzemann for the renowned German furniture house Wilde + Spieth. A chair in which simplicity, functionality, and a particularly refined design come together beautifully.
The SW 88 was designed in the early 1950s, a period in which designers were experimenting extensively with new combinations of industrial materials and artisanal techniques. The slender, black lacquered steel tubular frame gives the chair an almost graphic appearance, while the natural wickerwork provides warmth, structure, and a pleasing contrast. It is precisely this combination that makes the chair timeless and surprisingly versatile.
Designer Herta-Maria Witzemann (1918–1999) played an important role in post-war German interior and furniture design. In 1952, she became the first female professor at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart, where she taught interior and furniture design for many years. Her designs are characterized by a strong balance between functionality and an elegant, understated form. The SW 88 is a beautiful example of this.
Manufacturer Wilde + Spieth also holds a special place in German design history. During this period, the company collaborated with various leading designers and became particularly known for its modern furniture designs in steel and wood.
This original SW 88 is in neat vintage condition, with the characteristic signs of use befitting a chair of this age. A special design for lovers of German Mid-Century Modern, vintage design, and interiors where character and authenticity take center stage.
