Dear Marc Graetz,
Yesterday, your etching was thoroughly studied based on the images sent by email.
1. The signature by initial is exactly correct.
2. The numbering 29/100 is entirely correct:
Of all 105 Bible etchings, Chagall colored exactly 100 at the request of the publisher Tériade and numbered them from 1/100 to 100/100.
3. This is therefore his 29th coloring of the Bible etching: "David pleure Absalom". 4. The etching itself is undoubtedly a reliable copy of the original etching plate "David pleure Absalom", of which a total of 100 were printed.
5. 295 copies of the same etching plate were printed on Montval paper; these are not colored.
6. On the reverse side of your etching 29/100, you can see the number of the etching plate, namely 73 (out of the 105 etching plates of the Bible series).
Congratulations on these original hand-colored Chagallets!
Sincerely,
drs. Pieter-Hendrik Zuidema

Marc Chagall's dreamy compositions depict aspects of the artist's personal and family history, as well as Eastern European folklore in general. Flying figures, elements of Jewish tradition, peasant life, and animals are common motifs. Chagall's oeuvre—which included paintings, prints, books, ceramics, and stained glass—had an enormous influence on the development of 20th-century art: his supernatural subjects and emotional gestures formed a bridge between the work of earlier avant-garde movements such as Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism, and later modernist styles such as Surrealism. Chagall's career was disrupted by the World Wars, and although the artist traveled back and forth between Russia, France, and the United States, he managed to exhibit extensively during his lifetime, both on the European mainland and in the US. His work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Chagall also created stained-glass windows for the Abbell Synagogue of the Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem, the Saint-Étienne Cathedral in Metz, the United Nations building in New York City, and St. Stephen's Church in Mainz, Germany.
