The Maralunga Sofa was designed in 1973 by Vico Magistretti for Cassina and is today one of the most significant designs in Italian furniture design of the 1970s. Characteristic of the design are its generous, softly upholstered form and adjustable backrests. A mechanism patented by Cassina, hidden inside, allows the individual back sections to be moved from a low position to a high, supportive position. The Maralunga was awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1979. The offered items are two 2 seaters from the first series by Cassina 1974. The sofas are fully upholstered in high-quality brown leather, which has developed a particularly beautiful, natural patina over the years. The soft seat cushions, voluminous armrests, and movable back sections give the design its characteristic appearance. It was precisely the combination of a restrained external form and the then-innovative adjustability that made the Maralunga one of Cassina's most successful designs. The individually adjustable backrests not only change seating comfort but also the silhouette of the furniture – from a low, open form to a high backrest with a pronounced headrest. Condition: Good original vintage condition with traces consistent with age and use. The brown leather shows an even patina with creasing and occasional superficial scratches. Visible signs of wear are present on individual edges. One armrest is slightly more used, see detailed photos. Overall, the leather presents itself as well-maintained and with an authentic appearance appropriate for its age.
