Manfred Bergmeister (1927-2019)
In 1946 he completed his training as a blacksmith with Karl Nowak at the trade academy in Munich and passed his master's exam. His masterpiece was a Baroque grave cross. In 1947, Bergmeister established an apprenticeship for unemployed youths. Karl Nowak put him in contact with the legendary Munich blacksmith Sixtus Schmid, where he passed his master's exam in 1954. In the same year, he founded the Bergmeister blacksmith shop with his brother German Larasser. In 1968, Bergmeister was a founding member of the Akademie Handwerk München.
In 2001, he opened the museum Kunstschmiede Bergmeister Grave Cross in the old workshops of the art forge, with a collection of about 550 wrought-iron objects from five centuries. Bergmeister was a member of Ebersberg city council for 36 years and is an honorary citizen of the city.
