An exceptional bespoke bar cabinet created for the 1997 reopening of the legendary Hotel Adlon in Berlin, Germany.
The piece was designed by Living Design, the internationally active interior design studio responsible for major parts of the Adlon’s original interior concept and FF&E. The provenance and attribution to Living Design have been confirmed to us in writing, and the related correspondence is available as part of the documentation.
More than a cabinet, this is a true statement piece and transformable piece of furniture. In its closed form, it appears as a compact and elegant freestanding cabinet with highly figured luxury veneer, believed to be bird’s-eye maple, contrasted by a dark wooden frame and original brass fittings.
The upper glass-covered serving top can be unfolded sideways, increasing the overall width from 92 cm to 184 cm. Once the two large front doors are opened, the cabinet transforms into a fully equipped home bar with extensive mirrored surfaces, glass shelving and generous storage for glassware and bottles.
At the centre is an original Electrolux miniCool RE 1200 absorption refrigerator with a 31-litre capacity. The refrigerator is fully functional and, thanks to its absorption technology, operates almost silently.
The cabinet also retains its original brass hardware, lock and key. The locking mechanism works correctly.
Its construction is exceptionally substantial: the cabinet is extremely heavy and solidly built, with an estimated weight of approximately 120 kg.
Based on our current research, there are strong indications that the cabinet may have been manufactured by Fritz Witlake / Witnova, the premium furniture line known for high-end cabinetry and bespoke interior solutions. This manufacturer attribution is currently being further verified through historical documentation.

Condition
Good, authentic vintage condition.
All mechanical functions, including the doors, folding serving top, lock and refrigerator, work properly.
The wooden body shows occasional small marks, dents and age-related signs of use, all consistent with a nearly 30-year-old piece of hotel furniture.
The mirrored interior has two small areas of chipping/damage. There are no exposed sharp edges, and the damage does not affect the functionality or overall visual impact of the cabinet. These areas are documented in the detail photographs.
The exact original location of the cabinet within Hotel Adlon is still being researched.
