Product description
There was a time when mornings didn't begin in a bathroom. In bedrooms, near the bed or on a washstand, a large pitcher and its basin would await. Fresh water was poured into them, one would perform their ablutions, and these objects were part of those now-vanished daily rituals that silently narrate an entire way of life. Then came the 1920s and 1930s. The world was changing. Interiors too. And in Longwy, even these objects, inherited from the previous century, were to be adorned with the colors and boldness of their era. It was from this encounter that Betty was born. On an ivory background, Longwy unfolds a veritable garden around this imposing basin: powdery roses, pansies, blue and mauve flowers, tender foliage. An almost romantic profusion suddenly interrupted by something much more unexpected: a black and white checkerboard. The essence of Betty lies here. The charm of old-fashioned flowers confronted with the new geometry of Art Deco. On the pitcher, the decor becomes even more remarkable. The bouquet extends all around the neck, while the checkerboard takes hold of the handle and follows its curve. This detail gives it that very distinctive look, immediately recognizable, almost impertinent amidst the flowers. The basin measures almost 40 centimeters in diameter. One must imagine it in an interwar bedroom, placed on its washstand, the large pitcher standing in its center. It was not a trinket: it truly belonged to the room's decor. The earthenware retains the normal marks of this long existence. Under the basin, the enamel has crackled with time; the base shows the wear of its years of use. These traces are part of its history. Still united today, the pitcher and its large basin have retained what made them powerful: their generous proportions, their astonishing floral decor, and that delightful opposition between the softness of the bouquets and the rigor of the checkerboard. In a contemporary interior, Betty has no need to regain its former function. The basin can simply remain as it is, generous and spectacular, while the pitcher becomes a vase. Together, they can take pride of place on a large chest of drawers, in a bedroom or a bathroom, and immediately create what new objects rarely manage to produce: a presence. The presence of a home that has traversed the decades while preserving some of its secrets. Longwy, Betty model, Art Deco period, circa . Basin: approximately 40 cm in diameter.
