Place Stanislas in Nancy, a UNESCO World Heritage site, owes part of its fame to its gilded wrought-iron gates, a masterpiece by Jean Lamour. It is this monument that Nancy's confectioners chose to adorn their Bergamot candy boxes, the quintessential Lorraine specialty. This flat, rectangular lithographed tin box (21 cm long, 14 cm wide) features a bright red background framed by a gilded line. The lid bears the inscription "Bergamotes" in gilded cursive letters, above a black and white medallion depicting the gates of Place Stanislas with the basilica in the background. Gilded Rococo-style scrollwork frames the scene. The "Nancy" cartouche appears at the bottom of the medallion. The sides feature a frieze of small Lorraine crosses and gilded scrollwork on a red background. The interior, made of silver-plated metal with reinforcing ribs, is in good condition. Some gilded rubbing on the lid, light patina consistent with age. France, Nancy, 1950s-1970s.
