Harold Altman (1924–2003) was a renowned American painter and printmaker, considered by critics to be one of the most influential etchers and lithographers of the 20th century.
He is famous for his lithographs and line drawings, often executed with vibrant colors, primarily depicting scenes of public parks and streets.
He is particularly known for his views of the Luxembourg Garden in Paris (where he worked for about four months a year and had his lithographs printed at the DesJobert Workshop) as well as Central Park and rural Pennsylvania.
Highly prolific, with over 1200 unique editions produced, his works are featured in museums and private collections worldwide, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris.
His art is praised for its "mastery of infinite variations on a simple theme," succeeding in revealing the extraordinary within the ordinary.
