Rare, superb Limoges porcelain trinket dish with white enamel on a deep blue glaze, mid-20th century, circa 1940-1960. The stylized decoration of a catfish accompanied by a starfish and seaweed is rendered in white reserve on a cobalt background in a highly graphic, Japanese-inspired style.
The quality of the design and the technique suggest the work of Marcel Chaufriasse, with the added originality of a subject rarely explored by this artist. Free-form and slightly concave. Unsigned.
Length 20cm, width 13cm, height 3.5cm. In very good overall condition, with no cracks or chips. There are numerous, but light, scratches on the base, more or less subtle depending on the lighting. Approximately 300g.
