Product description
Lhote seltzer water dispenser in 19th-century Paris porcelain. This domestic container is divided into two internal compartments separated by a vertical partition. Both stoppers are present. There are two enamel flaws in the porcelain, visible in the photos.
Lhotes were created in Paris in 1870 and are the forerunners of glass siphons, which appeared around 1900. Each compartment held a solution composed of one part tartaric acid and the other part sodium bicarbonate. Each spout's opening was connected to one of the compartments, and the mixture of the two solutions at the outlet produced carbonated water primarily intended for medicinal oral use (gargling or mouthwash). Another use was to dilute certain alcoholic beverages, such as wine or absinthe.
