Product description
A round dining table with a diameter of 128 cm by the Dutch company Leolux, featuring a light wood top on a three-column base. Marked with the Leolux plate and an engraved production number on the underside.
Hugo de Ruiter started at Leolux in 1980 as a product developer and rose through the ranks to become Head of Product Development and in-house designer. The Trias is one of his most famous tables, and the name refers to the three columns upon which the entire piece rests.
Those three columns are not a stylistic choice but the core of the construction. They are supported at the top and bottom by slightly convex discs, and it is precisely because the forces are distributed in this way that the tabletop can remain so thin and the base disc so refined. From the side, the table is therefore strikingly light: a plane that appears to float above a bundle of columns, rather than a tabletop on a heavy frame.
The base disc is made of grey lacquered cast iron with a concentric wave relief that fans outwards—a detail that you only notice when standing right next to it, and which characterizes the table. The weight in that base is also the reason why the table stands rock-solid despite the narrow base.
Round dining works better in practice than people think: everyone sits the same distance apart, there are no corners to slide past, and with a central base, you can pull up anywhere without bumping into a leg. At 128 cm, four people sit comfortably and six are fine.
Leolux has been producing in the Netherlands for over eighty years and is known for its build quality. You can tell with this table: the tabletop is flawless, the lacquer on the base is intact, and there is no play in the construction.
