Hello buyers,
In this listing, I am offering a unique jug made by ceramicist Leo Martens. The jug is signed on the bottom and features a beautiful drip glaze with various shades of blue, white, brown, and other colors.
There is some crackle and a small firing flaw near the spout.
The width from the handle to the spout is 18 cm, and the height is 21 cm.
Leo Martens (born 1946) is a self-taught Dutch ceramic artist. In 1981, inspired by his partner Mariëtte Groeneveld and his work as a photographer at the ceramics department of the academy in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, he switched from photography to ceramics. In 1982, he opened his first studio, "Keramiek De Blauwbilgorgel" (Ceramics De Blauwbilgorgel), in Venray, later followed by Rooyart Keramiek, with galleries in Venray, the Kasteeltuinen (Castle Gardens) of Arcen, and Arnhem. His work evolved from high-fired, thrown porcelain/stoneware with his own celadon, sang de boeuf, and tenmoku glazes to sculptural vases and pot sculptures, in which the influence of oriental ceramics and the formal language of Colin Pearson remains visible. Since 2011, Martens has been working from a new studio and gallery in Valthermond, where ceramics and abstract nature photography form the core of his oeuvre.
