A unique figure among his peers in the avant-garde of postwar American art, Cy Twombly (1928–2011) drew his inspiration from ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian cultures. Twombly sought to demonstrate that “modern art is not uprooted, but rather rooted in tradition and continuity.” This poster, depicting “Leaving Paphos Surrounded by Waves (IV),” was created in 2009 for the exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in Athens. Twombly announces the departure from Paphos, a city sacred to the goddess Aphrodite. The ideogram of the boat, recurring in Twombly's work, symbolizes passage and exile, travel and return, death and imperial decline.
