Larry Rivers (1923-2002) was a painter, sculptor, poet and musician. He was an established figure in the New York School and became known for creating large paintings in which abstract and narrative elements merged. He studied under Hans Hofmann, who is considered the grandfather of abstract expressionism, but he never gave up figuration. Rivers' work is often compared to that of postmodern artists Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, and is considered an important precursor to pop art.
