Product description
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Art Nouveau brought nature into interiors and transformed everyday objects into true decorative compositions. Sarreguemines fully participated in this movement with its slipware productions, playing with relief, color, and free forms to give ceramics an almost organic presence. This large dish offers a particularly beautiful illustration of this. Its rectangular design breaks free from all rigidity with a deeply undulating outline, rhythmically punctuated by curves and scrolls. At the center, generous foliage unfolds in high relief. The leaves, individually modeled, seem to be placed on the surface, so much does their volume contrast with the background. Around them, the decoration continues its movement right into the borders, as if the vegetation itself had shaped the dish. The glazes give the piece its full depth. The bright yellow of the center gradually transitions towards orange tones before meeting the deep reddish-brown of the contours. The greens of the foliage, nuanced with olive and highlighted with lighter tones, further accentuate the impression of relief. The fine, natural craquelure of the enamel, acquired over more than a century, now lends a particularly alluring texture to this palette. Measuring approximately 36 cm in length and 23 cm in width, this dish has a remarkable presence. Its generous proportions and sculptural decoration allow it to be envisioned equally well displayed on a table or console, or upright among a collection of antique ceramics. The Sarreguemines mark molded on the reverse, accompanied by the number 8261 and manufacturing marks, connects the piece to the historical productions of the factory. Its aesthetic places it around 1900, in the full Art Nouveau period, when European manufacturers drew extensively from the botanical repertoire and celebrated the flowing lines inspired by the natural world. Preserved in very good condition for its age, with the nuances and patina of the enamel that now belong to its history, this large dish brings together the most captivating aspects of antique Sarreguemines slipware. Recognized French craftsmanship, an extraordinary richness of glazes, and that vegetal exuberance characteristic of the early 20th century. A decorative piece in its own right, born when a domestic object could still become, through the sole work of clay and enamel, a piece of nature in the home.
