Before plastic boxes and standardized storage invaded our homes, needlework had its own small furniture. Near the armchair or in the bedroom, the sewing caddy stored yarn, needles, patterns, and ongoing projects to be resumed the next day. This delightful rattan sewing caddy from the 1960s-1970s is a perfect example of this everyday history. Standing approximately 61 cm tall, it boasts a particularly slender silhouette. Its large, curved handle naturally extends the structure and allowed the sewing caddy to be easily transported from one room to another. The deep and generous basket is entirely surrounded by thin, horizontally arranged rattan canes. They form a regular succession of lines around the basket, held in place by vertical supports and traditional bindings. The elevated base completes the transformation of what could have been just a basket into a true piece of needlework furniture. Inside, its lovely orange-red textile lining, scattered with tiny flowers, remains, wonderfully evocative of 60s and 70s decor. The green, blue, and white of the small flowers punctuate the warm background and create a particularly pleasing contrast with the honey color of the rattan. The rattan has a beautiful patina acquired over decades. The sewing caddy shows the normal signs of its history: wear and marks on the rattan, some fragilities on certain strands and bindings, and a small snag in the textile lining. These details are visible in the photographs. It will naturally regain its primary function with a sewing, crochet, or knitting enthusiast. Its beautiful silhouette also allows for alternative uses: a basket for antique linen, storage for throws, magazines, or yarn, or even simply a decorative piece in a bohemian, shabby chic, or vintage interior.
