Large handmade and painted kokeshi doll from the late Showa period (1926-1989), XL size of 37cm! Circa 70-80s, Japan, marked at the bottom by the maker.
Specific areas have different types of kokeshi, they can be roughly divided into 11 different types, each with a distinctive shape or style. These dolls are very popular with collectors, also they are said to bring good luck which makes them extra popular! Very nice objects to decorate a children's room or living room with.
What are kokeshi dolls anyway? Kokeshi originate from Japan and they are simple wooden dolls without arms or legs that have been made as toys for children for over 150 years. They are hand-turned from wood and have a simple body and head with a few thin painted lines to define the face. The body often has flowers and ring designs.
