The vine runs across the faience as it would climb along a wall warmed by the Italian sun. A generous bunch of purple grapes stands out from the dish, surrounded by large leaves in nuanced greens and brown tendrils. Each berry has been sculpted in relief then enameled in plum, old rose, and white tones. The color shifts slightly from one fruit to another, lending the piece that particular depth characteristic of Italian naturalistic ceramics. The background holds another delicacy: the material reproduces the weaving of a basket. This trompe-l'œil basketry effect extends towards a scalloped edge, while a second, more discreet vine branch balances the composition. Italy boasts a long tradition of majolica dedicated to fruits, flowers, and the bounties of the earth. Throughout the 20th century, workshops continued to keep this repertoire alive by increasingly adding volume to the decorations. Grapes, a symbol of abundance and conviviality, naturally hold a privileged place in this tradition. Its generous dimensions, approximately 35 x 29 cm, allow it to be imagined equally well displayed on a console or placed in the center of a table. Its particularly pronounced relief also makes it a very beautiful piece to display vertically, almost like a sculpted panel. The reverse, resting on four small feet, bears the molded mark "Made in Italy 1221". The absence of an identifiable signature or manufacturer's mark leads us to simply retain its certain attribution: Italian work from the second half of the 20th century. A few fruits, a generous vine, a trompe-l'œil basket, and a whole Mediterranean tradition united in enameled earthenware.
