Some pieces need nothing to catch the eye. Placed on a console, a sideboard, or at the center of a table, they capture the light and immediately become the focal point around which the decor seems to organize itself. This large cut crystal sweetmeat dish belongs to that category. With its approximately 24 cm in height, its slender stemmed silhouette, and its imposing domed lid, it possesses that presence once reserved for beautiful objects intended to be admired as much as used. The crystal has been lavishly worked. Long, deep cuts depict stylized foliage, sheaves, and stars that unfold around the body. They extend onto the lid in an almost dazzling play of facets. As soon as light strikes it, the edges illuminate in sequence, and the design acquires remarkable depth. At the top, the silver-plated finial provides just the right contrast. Its patina speaks of the years, while the crystal remains brilliant. It is precisely this encounter between the transparency of the crystal and the mellowed gleam of the metal that gives the piece its character.
