Some pieces need no embellishment to catch the eye. Placed on a console table, a sideboard, or at the center of a table, they capture the light and immediately become the focal point around which the decor seems to organize itself. This large cut crystal sweetmeat dish belongs to that category. With its approximately 24 cm in height, its slender footed silhouette, and its imposing domed lid, it possesses the kind of presence once reserved for beautiful pieces meant to be admired as much as used. The crystal is richly cut. Long, deep cuts create stylized foliage, sheaves, and stars that unfold around its bowl. They extend onto the lid in an almost dazzling play of facets. As soon as light touches it, the edges illuminate one after another, and the design takes on a remarkable depth. At the top, the silver-plated finial provides the perfect contrast. Its patina tells of the years, while the crystal remains brilliant. It is precisely this meeting between the transparency of the crystal and the softened luster of the metal that gives the piece its character.
