Product description
This large white faience trumpet-shaped vase is imbued with history. Its slender, square-sectioned silhouette narrows elegantly in the middle before flaring out towards the opening, a shape characteristic of late 19th-century productions. On each side, a hand-painted polychrome decoration displays the characteristic motifs of grand Rouen faience: large cobalt blue lambrequins, golden yellow foliage scrolls, bouquets of flowers with flexible stems, and curling acanthus leaves, all on a white background with a yellow band on the upper rim and a blue band at the base. On one of the sides, the coat of arms of Les Sables-d'Olonne is carefully painted, featuring a crown, cartouche, and olive branches. On the underside of the base, a handwritten inscription "Les Sables d'Olonne" accompanies the number 1899/1. This mark is not that of a simple bazaar souvenir. At the end of the 19th century, major French seaside resorts were flourishing, and some commissioned personalized faience pieces from specialized manufacturers, notably the Desvres workshops, renowned for their faithful interpretations of Rouen decorations. These pieces were intended to celebrate the town's identity, offered or sold as prestige objects to holidaymakers of the Belle Époque. There is an old restored chip on an upper edge, discreet once the vase is displayed, and some slight traces of time consistent with its age. Height, 29 cm.
