Product description
This ceramic floor lamp was produced by Doria Leuchten in Germany during the 1970s. With its monumental proportions, earthy ceramic body and large opaline glass globe, the lamp combines the futuristic character of Space Age design with the tactile materials and warm colour palette typical of the decade. The substantial ceramic body has a tall, gently flared profile and is finished in contrasting shades of beige and dark brown. Horizontal relief gives the lighter lower section a pronounced texture, while the upper part is defined by deeply ribbed dark-glazed ceramic. The different sections are connected by rounded transitions, resulting in a strong, almost totemic silhouette. At the top, the original opaline glass globe forms a striking contrast with the heavily textured ceramic underneath. Its pure spherical shape gives the lamp its distinctive Space Age character. When illuminated, the opaline glass evenly diffuses the light and creates a warm, atmospheric glow. Doria was established in post-war Germany in 1945 and developed into a prominent manufacturer of decorative lighting. From its production facilities near Fürth, the company became particularly recognised for its creative use of glass and expressive lighting forms. During the post-war decades, Doria produced an extensive range of table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights and chandeliers and collaborated with German designers including Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg. The company’s lighting reflects the rapid development of German design during the second half of the 20th century. This large floor lamp captures the experimental spirit of Doria’s 1970s production particularly well. The combination of futuristic geometry, sculptural ceramic and earthy glazing gives the piece a strong presence, both illuminated and unlit. The lamp retains its original opaline glass globe and has been rewired with a dimmer, allowing the intensity of the light to be adjusted.
